Dry Erase Bins – My Favorite Friday

I couldn’t believe my luck when I spotted these beauties in Target’s dollar bin today!    Yes, you are seeing it right, they are DRY ERASE bins!  AND, you can write on all four sides!  Each side is a different color.

I have five tables, so I bought one for each table.  I was so tempted to buy 16, one for each student, but thought that may be overkill (or just crazy).

The possibilities for this are endless.  I had a conversation with @druinok about paint chips yesterday.  Kid can hold up a green, yellow, or red one to indicate their current level of understanding.  But, we felt bad taking paint chips from Lowes, and also doubted they would have enough for a class set!   Then, @MsKLaster then mentioned having, “Need Help” on  the side facing the teacher while the side facing them said, “Keep Working” to remind them to keep trying until the teacher gets to you.  Since I have 5 buckets, I figured this would be great for tables during group work.

What else could I do with these?

  1. you could use this to check for understanding as well. have students turn their group bucket to a certain color for a multiple choice answer, or write their answer on the side. Very cool idea!

  2. Those are so cool!!! I am going to a Target out of town tomorrow, so I’m hoping they have different stuff than mine does! This will totally be on my “grab it up” list 🙂

  3. I use colored paper cups as my check for understanding. I have a green, yellow, and red one for each student. They can stack them and put them on the corner of their desk with the color showing on the top corresponding to their level of understanding. Seems to work pretty well although I never use them as much as I should!

  4. Love this idea, and my Target shopping list keeps growing! The table tent works (I’ll share one for #made4math) but I love that students can write the personalized messages on the sides. Awesome find!

  5. I just purchased some today! I have a bucket for each group of students. Since i go from having a regular math, to accelerated, back to regular, to social studies, then back to regular math, I am planning on designating a different color to regular, accelerated, and social studies. Then, since I use a lot of manipulatives and do a lot of center work, I will write down how many pieces of whatever each of them will need to have on their desk and ready to go by the time my bell work is done. This way I don’t have to keep handing things back out.
